Answering the Call
My Journey as Omaha’s FREE Mobile Notary Public
In life, we don’t always recognize our calling right away. Sometimes, it reveals itself in the smallest moments—an overheard conversation, a problem that needs solving, a simple desire to help. That’s exactly how my journey as a notary began.
A Moment That Changed Everything
It was 2008, and I was standing in line at a bank in Omaha, waiting to get some documents notarized for work. The woman in front of me was pleading with the bank’s notary, asking if she could come to her home to notarize paperwork for her dying mother who couldn’t leave the house. The notary, tied to her post at the bank, kept telling her she couldn’t help.
I remember pulling out my phone, searching for “mobile notary in Omaha,” and finding nothing. In that moment, I saw a need—a gap in services that left people stranded in critical moments. While I couldn’t help that woman that day, I knew I could be the person who helped others like her in the future.
That same day, I went back to work, researched how to become a notary through the Nebraska Secretary of State, and took the necessary steps. A simple test, a surety bond, a small fee, and within a week, I had my certificate. I ordered my stamp, and just like that, I was ready to serve.
Notarizing with Purpose
Since then, I’ve traveled all over Douglas County, helping people who couldn’t leave their homes due to illness, notarizing documents for business owners after hours, and offering peace of mind to families in difficult moments. More than once, I’ve notarized documents for someone, only to see their name in the obituary days later. Knowing that I played a small role in helping their family finalize affairs and reduce stress during a painful time means everything to me.
Early on, I made a decision that set me apart: I wouldn’t charge for my services. I offer notarizations for free, only accepting tips or donations for my time and travel. Sometimes people give $5, sometimes $20, and sometimes, they have nothing to give at all. That’s never stopped me. The relief in their eyes—that’s payment enough.
Going the Extra Mile—Literally
I understand that not everyone can get a document notarized during regular business hours. That’s why I specialize in over lunch, after hours, evenings, and weekend appointments—whenever it’s most convenient for my clients. Whether it’s a business owner who can’t leave work before the bank closes or a family dealing with urgent paperwork, I make sure they don’t have to struggle to get it done.
Serving a Greater Purpose
My notary work expanded in an unexpected way when my wife and I needed a document notarized for the Philippines. The closest accredited notary for the Philippine Consulate General was over 400 miles away in Chicago. As I researched, I realized this was another opportunity to help. I applied for accreditation, and before long, Filipino-American families from six surrounding states were coming to me instead of making long, expensive trips to Chicago.
Even after the Consulate General changed its policies, allowing any notary to process documents as long as they send their documents to their State’s Secretary of State for authentication, I continued to help—free of charge. Instead of profiting from confusion, I guide people through the process, making sure they get it done correctly without unnecessary costs.
Over the years, I have notarized documents that have traveled across the world—Germany, Mexico, Canada, England, China, and beyond. I’ve met wonderful people, built lasting friendships, and become the trusted notary for families and businesses who appreciate honesty and service over profit. Many of my clients refuse to go to a bank for notarization, preferring the personal, reliable service they receive from me.
A Calling, Not Just a Service
At first, I didn’t think of my notary work as anything more than filling a need. But after participating in my parish’s “Called and Gifted” program, I learned about charisms—gifts given by God for service. Through that reflection, I realized that my work as a notary isn’t just a job or a hobby; it’s my calling.
God called me to serve, and I answered. As long as I am able, I will continue to offer my notary services to the people of Omaha and Douglas County, free of charge, because that is what I believe I am meant to do.
